Exhibitions

One of our main goals as a collective is to create engaging exhibitions that employ both printed publictions and artworks to foster dialogue on the topic of counter-histories, ecologies, visual cultures, and critical theory in Kuwait.

Akkaz Collective’s exhibition, publications, and installation, titled, On the Stillness of Prospects: Beyond the Scattering Horizons is currently on display at the Kuwait Pavilion (Rethinking, Rethinking Kuwait) at the Venice Biennale Architectura 2023: The Laboratory of the Future—through the project, we reflect on Kuwait’s geographical, ecological, and architectural histories and findings of Sulaibikhat, Doha, Osharij, and Umm Al Namil—all along the Sulaibikhat Bay—and Akkaz island in particular.

The first publication, the ‘Map is Not the Territory’ is a research project that dissects the topics of environmental toxicity, counter histories, and dissident archiving.

The second ‘Akkaz, an Anthology’ is a series of stories, reflecting the evidence found in each layer. In each story, fiction is carefully woven with reality. The following narrated stories are extracted from the descriptions Jacqueline Gachet-Bizollon gave each layer in her previously mentioned book. The stories will be accompanied with frames of illustrated or collaged artwork, and images collected throughout our research. Each visual piece will reflect our part fiction part factual story.

The third is ‘Ala Taraf Lisan Al-Ard’ is a visual documentation through the lens of Aziz Motawa capturing the last eight years of his treks along the Doha and Sulaibikhat coastal areas and their interwoven narratives of industry and toxicity that play out in these derelict marshy stretches of Kuwait.
